                        Guy P. DJoken, the Activist

                            Chairman of the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO Clubs, Centers & Associations Working Group
                            & Executive Director of UNESCO Center for Peace

                             

                              Guy Djoken is a renowned Social Entrepreneur, Educator, Civil Rights activist, public speaker, columnist, Poet and Author of “What a Century!” He is President of the Frederick County NAACP and past Vice President for the Maryland State NAACP.

In 2005, Guy Djoken partnered with the Frederick County Public Schools to initiate the Frederick County Regional Model United Nations. Over 1000 students have attended the program.

 

Guy is also known in the region for a one of UNESCO Center’s model program titled “Notable Voices from around the world”. The program brings Ambassadors and top level diplomats from around the world to Frederick. Notable guest includes Bahrain Ambassador to the United States H.E Houda Ezra Ebrahim Nonoo; Slovenian ambassador H.E Roman Kirn, H.E Maria de Fatima Lima Da Veiga, Cape Verde’s ambassador to the United States and Canada and Mr. Modibo Makalou, Senior Adviser to Mali President Amadou Toumani Toure.

 

In January 25th, 2007 Guy was invited as a panelist at the PEACEROUNDTABLE organized by the US Congressional Human Rights Caucus to address NEW methods to promote peace and possible applications in places of conflict with a particular focus on the use of Appreciative Inquiry.

As Human Rights/Civil Rights Instructor, Guy Djoken Teach “Civil Rights Chronicles: Emancipation to Civil Rights,” focusing on the impact of actions taken to address slavery and segregation, including the Emancipation Proclamation, the Supreme Court Brown v. Board of Education ruling, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  His class examines the role of prominent African-Americans who were instrumental in the struggle for racial equality and social justice in America, activists such as Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Dubois, Charles Houston, Philip Randolph, Jackie Robinson, Thurgood Marshall, Rosa Parks, Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcolm X.

June 2006: Hood College Justice Thurgood Marshall Award: The award is given to a person who significantly impacts the Frederick campus of Hood College by promoting respect and the appreciation of civil rights, equality and diversity.
